Distribution and Fine Structure of Antennal Sensilla in Emerald Ash Borer (Coleoptera: Buprestidae)

چکیده
The antennal sensilla of the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Male and female antennae have a scape, pedicel, and nine ßagellomeres. Both male and female antennae share Þve sensillum types: sensilla chaetica (mechanoreceptors), three types of sensilla basiconica (olfactory), and uniporous gustatory/taste sensilla. Apical depressions containing large sensory Þelds ofuniporous sensillawere seenon theeightmostdistal ßagellomeresofboth sexes.Counts of sensillum types showed thatmales possessed signiÞcantlymore uniporous sensilla than females.Wehypothesize that antennal contact is important for mate recognition by male A. planipennis. The distal apices of the eight outer ßagellomeres were seen to have “tufts” composed of two types of sensilla basiconica. A third type of sensilla basiconica was observed within the perimeter of the uniporous sensory Þelds. The structure and putative function of each sensillum type are discussed.

As of summer 2014, the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB), Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), has become established in 24 states in the United States of America and has killed tens of millions of ash trees since its introduction into Michigan in the 1990s. Considerable research has been conducted on many aspects of EAB life history, natural history, ecology, and management ...

The biological control agent Tetrastichus planipennisi Yang (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is a gregarious larval endoparasitoid of the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), an invasive cambium-feeding species responsible for recent, widespread mortality of ash (Fraxinus spp.) in North America. T. planipennisi is known to prefer late-instar emerald ash borer, bu...

The thermotolerance of the emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis Fairmaire (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), was evaluated by subjecting larvae and prepupae to a number of time-temperature regimes. Three independent experiments were conducted during 2006 and 2007 by heating emerald ash borer infested firewood in laboratory ovens. Heat treatments were established based on the internal wood temperature...

Emerald ash borer, Agrilus planipennis (Fairmaire) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), plays a significant role in the health and extent of management of native North American ash species in urban forests. An economic analysis of management options was performed to aid decision makers in preparing for likely future infestations. Separate ash tree population valuations were derived from the i-Tree Street...
